Sugar-Free Living
Nash recently wrote an article for Men’s Journal about Sugar-Free Living. Here’s an except:
[Dr. Suneil] Jain started talking about how important it is to cut sugar out of your diet. What? My first thought was that that would be impossible, but he made a convincing case. Jain told me that the average American eats about 92 grams of sugar a day, when the human body needs only about eight grams for energy, an amount that should always be satisfied through natural sugars from fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains

Krispy Kreme Donuts Not On the Diet

Shaq shows us that, Kripsy Kreme donuts definitely are not on the nash diet.
Green Tea
Nash posted a bit about tea the other day on his Facebook notes. You can read the original text here.
I started to become interested in green tea when I went to Japan for the World Cup in 2002. I heard how healthy it was and wanted to learn more about it. Not only does it provide numerous health benefits but it also has natural caffeine to stimulate your system like coffee or energy drinks, but without the harmful side effects. When I heard that I was sold!
[snip]
…green tea contains powerful antioxidants that help fight or prevent various forms of cancer, tooth decay, high cholesterol, heart disease and even aid in weight loss. I wouldn’t suggest drinking it before bed, as not to disrupt sleep cycles.
Actually, a couple days later Nash admits he actually prefers white tea.
Btw white tea is arguably healthier than green tea but a little harder 2 get @ restaurants etc. & maybe less caffeine. Take hi doses of both
The Nash Diet
Steve Nash posted about his diet on his facebook page the other day. You can see the original text from Steve Nash himself about the Nash Diet here.
Breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day…. along with lunch and dinner. I feel if your diet is consistent and well balanced (think long term rather than short term) it isn’t so important what you eat right before you play or the night before because your energy levels and recovery will be on target from the quality of your previous three to seven days of meals.
Consistent with most diets that say eat some sort of breakfast to jump start your metabolism in the morning.
-Gluten and wheat free cereal, sliced almonds and almond or rice milk. (If you don’t have the sensitivities I have look for a high fiber cereal. At least 4 grams of fiber.) I will also have a whole fruit smoothie or an apple, banana or orange. Green tea.
We’ll see later that Nash is a green tea fanatic. He also is allergic to gluten so gluten free cereal is something he eats by choice. Note that he also forgoes real milk here, instead opts for rice milk.
Lunch. A salad with grilled chicken or fish, vegetables, raw nuts and dried fruit.
Dinner. Grilled or baked fish or chicken with vegetables. Sometimes I’ll have brown rice.
Many people have quoted Shaq saying that the Nash Diet is “No Meat” (see previous post). This is obviously not true as Nash’s lunch and dinner both go for high protein low fat choices of fish or chicken.
Again, plan ahead. If you get hungry between meals have a plan as to what foods you’ll turn to and make sure you have plenty of them so your only options aren’t will power or ice cream. My snack foods are, dried fruit, whole almonds or whole cashews. All natural, raw foods energy bars. Raw vegetables like carrots and celery. Whole fruit or whole fruit smoothies. It goes without saying drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated. If you feel like you need electrolytes coconut water has the highest concentration of electrolytes but if your diet is good you should have plenty of electrolytes.
He strongly believes that your weapons for cravings aren’t simply will power, they’re being prepared. If you have some raw veggies, fruits, or nuts ready to battle your cravings you won’t succumb to that Cold Stone’s ice cream around the block.
Shaq swears by Nash Diet

This is the first story that got me interested in the Nash Diet.
O’Neal is doing more off and on the court than expected of the NBA’s fifth-oldest player. He comes to US Airways Center on off-nights for workouts or free-throw practice and has joined Jared Dudley on “the (Steve) Nash diet – no meat, no sugar, no starch, no soda, no nothing.”
“I’m feeling good,” he said. “I’m in shape.”

O’Neal, now 37 years old, has seen a resurgence in his career this year and he’s thanking the Nash Diet? He’s 325 lbs and yet he was able to play 75 games this year (after missing more than 100 in the last two years) at the age of 37. Incredible.
Welcome

I’ve been a fan Steve Nash for years. I’ve always been amazed at the high level of energy he has game after game, year after year for 13 NBA seasons. For the last 10 years, he’s played in more than 85% of regular season games which is a testament to his durability.
I create this blog because I couldn’t find any specific information about what exactly the “Nash Diet” is. If you find this useful, drop us a line here: nashdiet@gmail.com
